The prospect of MRM's future as a world-class mine lured new MRM Mining Manager Steven Rooney to the Top End.

The engineer joined MRM in 2013, leaving behind a life in Mt Isa and roles as operations manager at MIM Zinc's Black Star and Handlebar Hill open cut mines.

Steven said when the opportunity came up to move to MRM, he jumped at it.

"I'm really interested in where MRM is heading," he said.

"There's a lot of opportunity – I'm looking forward to the challenge and excitement as MRM moves into a new phase.

"MRM is really going places and has a lot of support behind it. I want to be part of that."

Steven studied as a mining engineer at Western Australia School of Mines at Kalgoorlie. He filled a number of engineering roles before being given the chance to work in operational roles.

"I like the sense of achievement that comes with mining. There is always the thrill of the chase and achieving your KPIs," he said.

"You get to see something develop. Every day you go out and see progress.

"Besides, it's every boy's dream to play with big trucks and dig big holes."
