Employment

Apprenticeships & Trainees

Our involvement in building a job-ready base of local employees begins when young people are still at school. Through our partnerships with the local school, government and community groups we help local people develop their skills and give them the motivation and opportunity to enter the workforce.

Our aim is to provide links between school programs that encourage children to get a good education and vocational training that provides long-term skills. For this reason, MRM has entered the following partnerships:

  • Department of Employment and Workplace Relations for a Structured Employment and Training Program which supports the employment and training of unskilled indigenous people
  • Northern Territory Employment and Training Authority for the provision of a Vocational Education Training accredited program since 2001
  • Northern Territory Department of Education Memorandum of Understanding which aims to improve the scope of education and post education outcomes for students at Borroloola
  • Borroloola School Memorandum of Cooperation
  • Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Industry under a Memorandum of Agreement regarding the delivery of Registered Training Organisation services.

Traineeship program

The MRM Traineeship Program is part of the mine’s Pathways to Employment strategy which helps local Indigenous people to gain real jobs at the mine. It forms one of the entry-level courses that qualify people with the skills and experience needed for jobs within the national mining industry. It also opens up nine alternative career paths within MRM.

Successful trainees graduate with a Certificate II in Entry into Mining. This is a nationally accredited qualification and an essential stepping stone to jobs within the mining industry and further career development.

Importantly, the program also includes:

  • a pre-vocational employment program to help trainees get work ready
  • mentoring to support involvement
  • a rotational aspect to provide experience across different areas of the mine so trainees can decide where they want to build their careers and undertake further training
  • training through an innovative heavy machinery simulator to instruct operators.
