Since mining began at MRM in 1995, the company has developed strong relationships with the communities neighbouring the mine and the Bing Bong loading facility, these include Borroloola, Robinson River and King Ash Bay.
We have been an active corporate citizen, contributing through:
- Infrastructure provision
- Participation in community organisations and committees
- Representations to government and media in a position to make a difference on community issues
- Long-standing partnerships with education and health organisations
- Sponsorship of community activities.
We have also maintained an ongoing dialogue with a broad range of community and government organisations about operations at the mine.
We are proud that MRM’s commitment to building and maintaining these relationships has been recognised through:
- The Northern Territory Minerals Council’s Award for Excellence for Community Relations for our investment of over $1 million in community infrastructure in 2006
- A Commendation Award in the Community Relations category of the Northern Territory Minerals Council’s Resource Industry Awards of Excellence 2005
- The Northern Territory Ministers’ Recognition Award in Resource Development 2003
- The Northern Territory Department of Mines and Energy Encouragement Award for Resource Development in the Community Relations category 2001.
- Our Community Relations Team is responsible for the mine’s ongoing liaison and consultation with the community. An office is located in Borroloola.
Our community relations activities ensure we maintain an open relationship with the community. The annual program includes:
- Information-giving: through the MemoRanduM newsletter, community noticeboards, factsheets, community meetings and displays, site visits and the annual Sustainability Report
- Consultation: through the MRM Community Reference Group, formal consultation in support of the MRM Community Benefits Trust and various meetings, briefings and workshops
- Active participation: corporate social involvement activities including the MRM Community Benefits Trust Board and other partnerships with community organisations, the Borroloola School and economic development committees to support the sustainable development of the region.
